Another year to remember!! By the Autumn, the cart was well under construction. A makeshift shed had been assembled around the cart, so that work could continue regardless of the weather. Woodwork, models, lighting and paintwork were all well advanced when disaster struck. A fire on Saturday evening totally destroyed the cart and generator trailers and everything on them. The only thing salvaged was the tractor, only by the quick thinking of Mike Barber and Mike Brixey who had pulled it out of the way, it was severely scorched but would live to fight another carnival season. 13 years of work and equipment had gone up in smoke. This was made even harder to bear by the belief that the fire had been started deliberately. Only half a day later, a unanamous decision was taken to somehow enter the forthcoming carnivals, now less than 5 weeks away. A cart was borrowed from another club and numerous offers of help with materials, labour and money came flooding in. The generous support from villagers was overwhelming, Coleford really cares for its Carnival Club. Through sheer hard work long into the night and gutsy determination, Huckyduck arrived in Bridgwater and certainly had not disgraced itself. This was later confirmed when to everyone's disbelief and amazement, the entry was awarded 1st place at Bridgwater. |
