Carnival Club was officially formed consisting mainly of three families,
the group would hold regular meetings in each others houses to reduce
baby sitting costs.
Early minutes of the meeting tell how the theme was decided upon. The
men would have their material for costumes bought but the ladies would
try to find their costumes from jumble sales etc. The theme started
life as a walking entry for the village carnival. A huge barrel of beer
was made and pulled by the men using ropes.
With Confidence it was agreed to enter Glastonbury Carnival as a fully
mounted entry. This called for lighting and so one string of light bulbs
was fixed from one end of the float to the other. This was big league
stuff! Members still recall how they sat on their entry on the Street
Bypass in full costume, ready to start from the middle of the afternoon
wondering how clubs arriving late in the afternoon would ever be ready.
The night proved to be a long one! The children were crying, they were
tired and cold and it was discovered that perhaps the clubs arriving
early evening did know what they were doing.
To the results!! Yes one or two members believed that perhaps the judges
felt sorry for the club and had awarded them with a small prize - this
was the open Feature Class - what a lot there was to learn. The men
then had to bring the entry back to Coleford with symptoms of hyperthermia
- Never Again!.....
